Good Scientific Practice

Honesty (vis-a-vis oneself and others) is the basic principle of scientific work. It is both an ethical norm and the foundation of the rules of professional conduct (good scientific practice) which might differ from discipline to discipline.

One of the basic tasks of a university is to convey those principles to students and staff alike. Therefore, the Executive Board of the TU Berlin has decreed the "Statute on the Safeguarding of Good Academic Practice at TU Berlin (PDF, 282,2 KB)" (8 March 2017). It contains:

Part I: Rules of Good Academic Practice

Part II: Procedure in Cases of Suspected Academic Misconduct

Part III: Documentation

Both the guidelines and rules are based on the recommendations of the German Rector's Conference (HEK) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), in particular the Recommendations of the Commission on Professional Self Regulation in Science as amended in 2013. Adherence to them is a fundamental part of cooperation by all people involved in science and academia.

The contact person of all questions regarding good scientific practice is the ombudsperson of the TU Berlin, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Rötting. In cases of suspected scientific misconduct, the Investigation Commission for Scientific Misconduct might be involved.

Code of Conduct for Doctorates in Cooperation with Commercial Enterprises

In July 2017, the Executive Board of the TU Berlin decided on a"Code of Conduct" as the basis for so-called “industry-sponsored doctorates”. The "Code of Conduct" emphasizes the importance of a free choice of topics, participation in the scientific discussion, and the publicity of the research results. In doctoral projects in cooperation with commercial enterprises, the supervisor of the dissertation is encouraged to make these principles known to the industrial partner. All parties involved should confirm these basics by signing the form below at the admission to the doctoral procedure.
