Promotion of Women at TU Berlin

Following the idea of gender mainstreaming TU Berlin began implementing measures to ensure equal opportunities on all levels of the university as early as 1990.

Based in on the Guidelines to promote Women (Frauenförderrichtlinie (FFR)) which were passed in 1993 TU Berlin has strict rules concerning hiring and compatibility of family and professional life. In addition, the guideline names concrete steps to promote women.

For its commitment TU Berlin was awarded the quality label „TOTAL E-QUALITY“ and the certificate „audit familiengerechte hochschule“.

The German Research Foundation conferred on TU Berlin its best mark for implementing research oriented equality standards (Forschungsorientierten Gleichstellungsstandards), naming TU Berlin as one of the 22 top universities in this field in Germany.

Based on the Equal Opportunities Higher Education Ranking from 2013 by the (Center of Excellence Women and Science) TU Berlin was listed as number one Institution.

Since 2010 the Platform for Implementation of Research Oriented Equality Standards („Plattform zur Umsetzung der Forschungsorientierten Gleichstellungsstandards“ (PUG)) was introduced as central body for implementing equality standards.

Graduation Scholarships for Women

The Central Women's Council of TU Berlin offers a total of eight graduation scholarships for doctoral candidates, especially in Engineering and Natural Sciences. Five scholarships are granted annually on April 1st, three on October 1st. The scholarships (€1.000 per month) have a duration of six month.

Virtual College for Women in Doctoral Research


Existing since 2003, the virtual college offers a network for young women with interdisciplinary research topics. The network shall offer support for women pursuing doctoral research thus increasing success rates. It offers courses and seminars and currently includes 80 doctoral candidates.

Professional Research and Teaching for Women (ProFil)


ProFil is a joint project of four universities offering women twelve month of extra-occupational support for the planning and development of their careers with a special focus on the preparation for future leadership and management tasks in academia. The programme aims at women researchers with a teaching qualification (Habilitation), junior professors, research group leaders and postdoctoral researchers of the participating universities.
