Doctoral exchange

In general, the TU Berlin has no formalized process or program for the exchange of doctoral students, there is no registration or reporting requirement for guest doctoral students. Nevertheless, we recommend a registration as guest doctoral student.

Please get in touch with a professor working in your area of interest to directly organize the length and content of the exchange with him or her. When applying for the exchange please make sure that you attach all the needed documents which should include:

  • a personal letter, which includes your motivation and the purpose of your stay,
  • your academic CV with a publication list,
  • a well designed summary or exposé of your planned work,
  • a time and project plan for the guest stay.

If you need a visa, you can ask for a written confirmation letter from the professor who will supervise you. Together with a proof of financing for the duration of your guest stay this confirmation letter will normally be enough for the visa acceptance at the German embassy. Please inquire for yourself the necessary documents for the visa application at the German embassy in your homecountry.

To register at the TU Berlin as a guest doctoral student, go to the following website of the TU Berlin (sometimes this step is also required by the German embassy before issuing visas): https://zulapp.zuv.tu-berlin.de/qisserver/servlet/de.his.servlet.RequestDispatcherServlet?state=wimma&stg=m&imma=einl. Fill out the online registration, print and sign the form. Attach the written supervision confirmation of your supervisor at the TU Berlin for the guest stay and send both documents to the following address:

After examination of your documents, the division IA 1 „Studierendenservice“ can hand out an Admission letter and you can complete the registration process. The Admission letter might be necessary for the visa application at the German embassy. Besides a possible visa requirement, the registry has other advantages. You will receive a temporary student card, access to the library, you will have a discount on public transport and for cafeterias and restaurants on the campus, as well as access to other services of the Studentenwerk Berlin.
