Doctoral Research in Germany

Doctoral degrees in Germany are awarded by the responsible faculties on behalf of the university. They generally require above average results of university studies and are differentiated by discipline.

Admission with a foreign university degree requires that the equivalence to the respective German grades ("Diplom", Staatsexamen, Magister, Master) is checked.

A doctorate requires a scientific treatise - the dissertation - which can be written in German or English and a scientific defence.

Doctoral work is generally supervised by a professor of the university, there is normally no formal program of study. A roughly comparable format to the Anglo-American model are doctoral programs (e.g. research training groups funded by the German research foundation) which combine supervision by a committee with an course program including academic aspects as well as transferable skills.

General information regarding doctoral research in Germany can be found on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the online platform research-in-germany
